Food and Wine Preceptorial with Professor Ponzy Lu and Neal Ewing

Join us for an evening of great food, wine and education at a renowned Chinese restaurant Chung Hing

Ever struggle to decide what wine to serve with those baby back ribs or Chinese takeout? Always opt for a beer instead? Well, you're not alone, and the Penn Alumni Club is here to help!

We're taking our Access: Restaurant events to a whole new level of culinary excitement and education with a dinner at renowned Chinese restaurant Chung Hing. We'll be joined by Penn Professor of Biochemistry and food fanatic Ponzy Lu as well as wine expert and educator Neal Ewing. Neal is Certified Wine Educator (CWE) from the Society of Wine Educators and a wine instructor for the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College and for Drexel University's Culinary program. We'll enjoy specially selected dishes and wine pairings while our guests give us the science behind why some combinations work well together and others flop.

The menu includes the following dishes served in traditional Chinese Banquet order:
  • Pork Dumplings
  • Peking Duck Roll
  • Chicken Sauteed Shing Tau Style with String Beans
  • General Tsos Chicken
  • Five Spice Fish and Shrimp with Sweet and Spicy Dipping Sauce
  • Spicy Beef with Black Bean Sauce and Turnips
  • Crispy Beef Hunan Style with Peppers
  • Baby Bok Choy with Bean Curd and Chinese Broccoli
  • Singapore Noodle with Curry Sauce
  • Banquet Ending Soup
Each guest will be given five wine samplings to be paired with the menu, plus one sparkling wine. The selections are as follows:
  • Mionetto Prosecco (Italy)
  • Brancott Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand)
  • Merkelbach Kinheimer Rosenheck Riesling Kabinett (Germany)
  • Benzinger Carneros Chardonnay (Napa)
  • Sebastiani Pinot Noir (Sonoma)
  • Whitehall Lane Bommarito Cabernet (Napa)
This is sure to be an evening unlike any other and you're guaranteed to come away with a new appreciation for how you eat and drink, even on a casual night of takeout!
